The representatives of six Amazonian countries are meeting this Friday, September 6 in Colombia for the emergency summit on the Amazon. The representatives of indigenous peoples hope that neighboring countries will encourage the Brazilian president to adopt a more responsible environmental policy.

The powerful fires in Amazonia and deforestation for agricultural purposes threaten many indigenous lands.

" Our hope lies with some representatives of states who are realizing that Jair Bolsonaro's way of doing things is not the right one: to get things done at all costs by relying on destruction. From this first meeting we can begin to feel their orientation, "says Nara Baré, head of the Coordination of Brazilian Indigenous Organizations. The young woman does not expect anything from the Brazilian president, but much of the summit in Colombia.

Ivaneide Bandeira, also head of an association for the defense of indigenous peoples in Brazil, considers it essential to keep the attention of the international community on this issue.

" I think that the salvation of the Amazon depends heavily on international support, because today they do not burn only indigenous lands, " she says. I think it is fundamental that the agri-food sector expresses itself in favor of the Amazon. It's already the case. I saw that some companies are doing things for the Amazon. It's a way to protect the Amazon. "

Nara and Ivaneide want to stay positive. They regret, however, that no representative of the indigenous peoples who populate the Amazon has been invited to participate in the summit in Colombia.
