• Remodeling: The appearance of historical remains paralyzes part of the works in Plaza España

After maintaining a Numantine resistance, the Chinese restaurant in the Plaza de España has closed its doors . Its closure was postponed several times, but the remodeling of the aforementioned square finally gave him the lace.

Initially, the City Council ended its administrative concession on January 31, but after the successive postponements of the works, the restaurant lasted until June 18.

His name was Zhou Yu Long, but everyone knew him as the Chinese of Plaza de España. It was one of the first restaurants in Madrid that served authentic Chinese food and, for this reason, a gap was made between their countrymen and the clientele of the capital.

The small Madrid Chinatown, which occupied the underground passage in the Plaza de España, languishes during these days. Gone are the long lines that formed at the doors of the restaurant in search of its famous empanadillas.

Next to it, the Far East food store closed on October 31. Since 1969, this trade offered Asian products such as Chinese noodles, rice for sushi, ramen, soy sauce and even dictionaries to learn Mandarin . The travel agency of the same name also made the closure half a year ago and moved to Gran Vía Street.

Famous for their dumplings

The Zhou Yu Long had no great luxuries but the charm of the shabby . The formula for the success of this small tasca, with just 9 tables, was very simple: popular dishes such as noodle soup, rice balls with sesame or chicken sauteed with vegetables for only 4 or 5 euros served at the speed of Thunderbolt.

The fate of this iconic restaurant is now uncertain. When the works are finished, the underground commercial passage will depend on the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) , which is the one that manages the public parking of the Plaza de España. According to sources from the City Council, it is not yet decided what will happen to the locals and if they will be taken out again.

The remodeling of the Plaza de España was the last draft of the Manuela Carmena legislature. The works began last May and were expected to last 21 months until February 2021. However, after the discovery of archaeological remains of the sixteenth century, the work has been halted, which will mean a new delay.

The project, with a cost of 62 million euros , was chosen after a participatory process and intends to link the Gran Vía with Madrid Río through the Plaza de España.

The underground passage will change completely after the reform. The project, called Wellcome Mother Nature, plans to build five commercial premises there and will open gaps in the ceiling so that natural light enters . The space will also connect with the Metro stop.
