• Florida is preparing for the arrival of hurricane Dorian. Trump: "Now he looks like a monster"

31 August 2019The hurricane Dorian that is heading towards the coasts of Florida has become of category 4 and, according to the American president Donald Trump, it will be "devastating".

In a nightly update, the National Hurricane Center called Dorian "an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane", with winds of up to 215 kilometers per hour.

According to forecasts, it should hit the southern coast of Florida between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, and then head towards the central areas of the state.

Trump at Camp David, the presidential residence of Maryland, will be joined by experts from the US civil protection, Fema (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to monitor the situation.

In 24 hours, the tropical cyclone passed from the minimum category, the 1, to category 4, defined as "extremely dangerous" by the National Hurricane Center in the last bulletin released at 11 pm on Friday. The maximum intensity on the Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricanes is category 5.

"It could be an absolute monster", Trump had already alerted Thursday, announcing the cancellation of his planned trip to Poland due to the hurricane.

In the Bahamas, where Dorian could dump between 3 and 4.5 meters of water, evacuations have already taken place, also ordered in some areas of Florida starting on Sunday.

At risk there are 21 million people, among other things in one of the most popular weekend vacations in the US for Labor Day on September 2nd.

On the trajectory of the hurricane also the Kannedy Space Center of NASA, the Disney park in Orlando and the golf resort of Trump, Mar-a-Lago.

The governor of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, declared a state of emergency throughout the state, promptly approved by the president on Friday morning to unblock federal aid.

In some petrol stations the petrol has run out while in the supermarkets the shelves have been emptied to stock food, water and medicines. DeSantis urged residents to accumulate sufficient supplies for at least a week.

The Freeport airport in the Bahamas will be closed from August 31st to September 3rd. Orlando airport will remain closed at least until Tuesday. In Florida two thousand national guards were mobilized on Friday and as many as Saturday will be added. Trump reported that he will return to Washington from Camp David on Sunday to meet Fema officials at 12:30.
