The Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix will take place on the circuit of Catalonia in Barcelona in 2020, announced Tuesday Formula One and the Catalan organizers.

"The circuit of Barcelona-Catalonia has extended its contract with Formula One for the year 2020, ensuring the holding of the Spanish Grand Prix of the World Championship for the 30th time consecutively," said a statement from the Catalan organizers.

Chase Carey, boss of Formula One, welcomed the signing of the agreement, pointing out that the decision to maintain the Spanish GP "is part of our strategy to maintain the European roots of Formula One while developing the Championship on new territories ".

Chase Carey refers in particular to the holding, in 2020, of the Grand Prix of Vietnam on a new urban circuit in Hanoi and that of the Netherlands in Zandvoort.

The 2020 F1 season will start on Sunday, March 15th in Australia.

On the other hand, Barcelona-Catalonia circuit officials also announced the implementation of a strategic plan for the development of a more ambitious project to define the role that Formula 1 will have in the long term.

Before Barcelona, Silverstone announced an agreement to host the GP of Great Britain in 2020 and until 2024. Three other circuits must negotiate this year their extension for 2020: Italy to Monza, Mexico to Mexico City and Germany in Hockenheim.
