Two UN staff members were killed and more than a dozen injured Saturday when a car bomb exploded in the Hawari area west of the eastern city of Benghazi.

The Reuters news agency said it had seen a list of the names of the dead employees, who were identified by sources in the city as foreigners, and the Associated Press quoted a similar confirmation, citing medical sources in the city.

The car bomb exploded outside the Arkan Mall complex, which is located near the UNSMIL office in Libya.

According to Al Jazeera sources, the explosion that occurred in the vicinity of a market in the Hawari area followed the passing of the UN convoy less than a minute. Pictures circulated on social media showed burning cars and a glass broken by the bombing.

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Libya Ahmed Khalifa said that the explosion that occurred today in the Hawari area is not the first of its kind recently, where less than a month ago a car bomb exploded in a cemetery in conjunction with the funeral of Major General Khalifa al-Mesmari, a former commander of the Libyan special forces, resulting in At least four people were killed and about 30 others were wounded.

The reporter added that the latest explosion comes within the security breaches witnessed in the city, including the kidnapping of the representative of the city of Benghazi Siham Sargewa by gunmen from one of the groups belonging to the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Hifter.
