"The Sheikh has been arrested more than once on the basis of his permanent support for the detainees of opinion," said Al-Mutab, without elaborating.

The Saudi authorities did not follow the news, but they usually say they are committed to human rights.

The case is not the first in Saudi prisons. Activists announced in January the death of Sheikh Ahmad al-Amari, dean of the Faculty of Holy Quran at the University of Madinah al-Munawwarah, because of a stroke in the prison without comment from the authorities at the time.
