The chief of staff of the Algerian army on Tuesday (July 30th) rejected the appeasement measures requested by the group of mediators to launch consultations on the modalities of the presidential election.

The dialogue aims to hold a presidential election " as soon as possible, " said Ahmed Gaïd Salah Tuesday. If this position is not new, the Algerian chief of staff this time undermined the initiative of dialogue.

He said the requests for appeasement were " diktats " and " poisoned ideas " that would come from what they call the " band ", an expression he uses to describe businessmen close to the family of Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

These measures of appeasement , including the release of persons held in pretrial detention for wearing a Berber flag or lightening the security apparatus during demonstrations, are requests from civil society organizations, political parties, but also demonstrators.

Economist Smail Lalmas leaves " panel of mediators"

And while the " panel of mediators " is strongly criticized, the main argument of its seven members was that these measures of appeasement had received a favorable opinion of the acting president Abdelkader Bensalah.

In this context, the statement of the Chief of Staff weakens the "panel of mediators" against the opposition and protesters. In the late afternoon, one of the members, economist Smail Lalmas announced that he was leaving the panel.
