Tunisian opposition leader Rachid Ghannouchi on Monday deposited his candidacy for parliamentary elections on October 6.

In a press statement after depositing his file at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission in the capital, al-Ghannouchi said: "This candidacy is not separate from the late President Baiji Kayed al-Sibsi. Ghannouchi called on party leaders and political figures to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections to return to the parliamentary political process. He considered that the nomination of major political figures will be a catalyst for the influx of voters to vote, and a factor in reducing the phenomenon of abstention from participation in the elections.

Ghannouchi also said that the Nahdha movement will decide over the next two days its position regarding the upcoming presidential elections, whether to nominate a person from within or to support a candidate from outside.

Hafez al-Sibsi, the son of late Tunisian president Béji Kayed Sibsi and director of the executive office of the Neda Tunis party, said he had decided not to run for legislative elections.

He said in a statement today that he decided to maintain the symbolism of his current position as head of the party of the deceased Baiji Kaid Sibsi, stressing that if he ran on the top of the list to get a good rate, but preferred to withdraw from the current election.
