Tunisians came in large numbers to attend the national tribute to their first democratically elected president, Béji Caïd Essebsi. "It's a real unifying moment," reports France 24 correspondent in Tunis, Lilia Blaise. The funeral began earlier in the morning on Saturday, July 27 at the presidential palace in Carthage. Several international leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, Algerian interim President Abdelkader Bensalah and Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit were present. The funeral procession then left the Carthage Palace towards the Djellaz cemetery, about 25 km away, where Béji Caïd Essebsi was to be buried alongside his family members.
