The US state was hit Thursday by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake. Its epicenter was located in the Searles Valley area, about 240 km northeast of Los Angeles.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the situation was "under control" in southern California, hit by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake. "Have been fully informed about the earthquake in Southern California, everything seems to be under control," he tweeted.

"There are fires, water leaks, leaks of dangerous products". This earthquake is the strongest in the region for two decades, about 240 km northeast of Los Angeles, but it did not do major damage or casualties, according to preliminary reports available. The epicenter was located in the Searles Valley area, near Ridgecrest City and a US Navy military base, the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station.

An official of this base told AFP that there was "significant damage" on the base. "There are fires, water leaks, leaking dangerous products," she said, without giving her name.
