This July 5th marks the 20th Friday of the demonstration for a change of regime in Algeria. It also coincides with the national holiday, anniversary of the independence of the country. The calls to protest are very numerous, because the challenge is to weigh in the balance of the transition.

Next Tuesday, July 9, the mandate of the interim president will end. And it will be necessary to invent a solution since the Constitution does not provide for it. This solution, the protesters want to be part of it. They believe that only the number of people on the street this Friday, July 5 will allow them to obtain more concessions from the authorities.

More than 4 months after the beginning of the movement, the transition that everyone is talking about does not make anyone agree. The army wants a presidential election as soon as possible. Groups of opposition political parties have started to get together with some civil society groups, but they are divided on the way forward. Should we change the Constitution first? Should priority be given to free and transparent elections? And how long should it last?

The major problem remains that these initiatives have difficulty in gaining the confidence of protesters. But above all, in parallel, these last two weeks have been marked by a security hardening. In the capital, 34 demonstrators were remanded for wearing a Berber flag .
