A man opened fire Thursday, June 27 on an imam and a loyal Sunna mosque in Brest, Brittany. The days of the two victims are not threatened, but the gunman was found dead, probably by suicide, a few kilometers away. The investigation is however in progress to determine the reasons for its action.

The author of the facts was known to the police but not particularly followed or considered to be close to the far-right movement. He left documents near the place where he was found dead. He had also published a photo on social networks, which suggests a premeditated act.

One of his victims, Imam Rachid El-Jay, was in any case the target of several threats from both the Islamic State organization and ultra-right groups.

This imam had indeed made headlines when, a few years ago, he published videos of him during sermons. In one of them, he explained to children that listening to music could turn them into pork.

As time passed, his discourse evolved from the promotion of a radical Islam to a more moderate practice.

If we believe the first elements revealed by the police, it seems that he was specifically targeted. The gunman entered the mosque, asked to make a selfie with Rachid El-Jay, before opening fire.

The second injured person was next to them at the time of the incident. Like the imam, she was shot and wounded, but her days are not in danger either.
