US President Donald Trump on Monday signed a decree imposing, he said, "hard" sanctions against the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Donald Trump, these new sanctions follow "a series of aggressive behavior by the Iranian regime over the past weeks, including the destruction of an American drone".
The assets of Ayatollah Khamenei "not spared"
"We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran," said Donald Trump from the Oval Office, saying sanctions could stay in place for "years". The United States sanctioned eight senior officers of the Revolutionary Guards.
"The sanctions contained in this decree will prevent the Supreme Leader, his team and others who are closely related to him from having access to essential financial resources," said Donald Trump. "The assets of Ayatollah Khamenei and his team will not be spared by the sanctions," he said.
