US President Donald Trump has said he sent a friendly letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on Tuesday (Reuters).

President Trump told reporters on the same day that he had confirmed the transfer of the letter.

The White House also said the day before, President Trump sent a letter to Kim and continued the communication between the two leaders.

President Trump said the letter he sent to him was a "Happy Birthday" letter, AFP reported.

President Trump said on November 11, ahead of the first anniversary of North Korea's summit in Singapore June 12, "I received a letter of thanks yesterday."

North Korea announced on July 23 that Kim expressed his satisfaction with the letter received from President Trump during his Korean visit, and revealed that President Trump had sent a letter.
