Italian Marco Giampaolo is AC Milan's new coach, where he has signed a two-year contract with an option for another year, the Italian club announced on Wednesday.

Giampaolo, 51, former coach of Sampdoria Genoa, succeeds the Lombard club Gennaro Gattuso, whose AC Milan had separated in May after he failed to qualify the team for the next League of Champions, with only a 5th place in the Championship.

"Giampaolo will lead the team from the first training of the season in Milanello on July 9," said AC Milan in a statement.

The new coach Rossoneri, already past the banks of Empoli, Brescia and Cagliari, should touch about 2 million euros per season on the bench Milan.

At the head of Sampdoria, Giampaolo, former midfielder, led the Genoese club to ninth place in the league last season.

AC Milan saw a hectic offseason with the departures of the leadership of former club legends Leonardo, Zvonimir Boban and Paolo Maldini. In addition to financial fair play restrictions on the next transfer market, the Lombard club is also engaged in a legal battle with UEFA over whether or not to participate in the next European Europa League campaign.
