For the leadership of the Republicans, it is necessary to dissociate "the presidential election of the party" and "the presidential election of the nation" after the defeat of the right to the Europeans.

Candidates for Republican presidency (LR) will have to make a "moral commitment" not to run in the presidential election of 2022 for the sake of "appeasement". This was agreed on Tuesday evening the leadership of the party that has suffered a rout in the European elections. "We dissociate the presidential election of the party (of) the presidential election of the nation. (...) It is a moral commitment that one asks to our candidates", declared the acting president of LR, Jean Leonetti at the end of the political office of the party.

"A soothing and breathing"

LR has been going through a deep crisis since its debacle in the May 26 poll, where it came fourth with 8.48% of the vote. "It gives both appeasement and breathing in the party, knowing that in the French Republic every person has the right to stand in front of the voters," added Jean Leonetti, who took the control of LR after the resignation of Laurent Wauquiez but will not be a candidate for the presidency of LR.

Jean Leonetti also announced the holding of a "convention" on "values and fundamentals of the Republican right", to be held at the headquarters of LR in Paris in late June-early July, with the leaders of the federations, "in agreement with "the initiative of reconstruction of the right and the center launched by the president of the Senate Gérard Larcher.

Jacob and Peltier sensed

The decisions taken at this convention "will be validated and debated (...) in all the federations", in order to conceive a "fundamental charter of the values" of LR to which the candidates to the presidency of the movement will be able to adhere, specified the leader of the party . "It allows to have a constructive debate that will not interfere with the debate of the election for the presidency of the party which it will arrive in October," he argued, after the validation by the political bureau the calendar of this election, scheduled for October 12-13 and, in case of a second round, October 19 and 20.

The boss of the deputies LR Christian Jacob, supported by caciques of the party, indicated Tuesday that he would contest the presidency of the party if he embodied "a solution" and specified that he had "no ambition" for the presidency of the Republic. MP Guillaume Peltier also plans to run for the post, but he felt "far-fetched" the hypothesis of not being able to run at the same time the Elysee. Bruno Retailleau, patron of senators LR, could also introduce himself.
