Czech Marketa Vondrousova (19, 38th in the world), joined Britain's Johanna Kanta (26th) in the semifinals of Roland-Garros with her victory Tuesday 7-6 (7/1), 7-5 against the Croatian Petra Martic (31st), a first for both players.

The young Czech has so far never passed the knockout stages of a Grand Slam (US Open 2018), and this year is playing his third Roland Garros, the 9th Grand Slam of his career.

In four confrontations, she had never beaten Croatia. "Roland Garros must be my lucky charm," she reacted after her victory.

She had to save three set balls in the first set, and had to do it four times to end the extremely tight game where she largely left the Croatian to play.

In a decimated women's draw, she will face Thursday for a place in the Grand Slam final Johanna Konta, the first British player to reach this stage of the Porte d'Auteuil competition for 36 years.
