Russian and Israeli military officials held talks in Moscow, during which they focused on developments in the situation in Syria and on pressing security issues in the Middle East.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the two sides focused during the talks on establishing direct communication channels between the Russian base of Hameimim in Syria and the Israeli Air Force Command Center to prevent incidents in Syrian airspace.

The ministry added that Israel wanted to inform Moscow of the details of the military operation carried out by the Israeli army on the border with Lebanon in the name of "shield of the north" to destroy tunnels that Hezbollah accuses of building in the region.

Relations between Russia and Israel have been strained since September 17, when the Syrian army accidentally shot down a Russian military aircraft while it was fighting an Israeli air raid on Lattakia in northwestern Syria.

Fifteen Russians were killed in the incident, which Moscow blamed on Tel Aviv, accusing its pilots of using the Russian plane as a cover.

In response to the plane crash, Moscow announced new measures to protect its army in Syria, including the supply of the S-300 system to Damascus.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had told Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov that Israel would continue to strike at "hostile targets" in Syria, despite Moscow's decision to arm Damascus with its sophisticated S-300 missile defense system.
