The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court has sentenced a 37-year-old to six years in prison. The man was said to have been a member of a special unit within the radical Islamic Taliban for about five years.

The court now found him guilty of joining the Taliban. The group is classified by the federal government as a terrorist group.

On the other hand, the judges did not consider that the man was guilty of joint attempted murder. Thus, the verdict remained under the demand of the federal prosecutor, who had demanded eight years in prison for the man.

The Polish-born German traveled to Pakistan in August 2012 and joined the terrorist group a few months later. In February this year, he was arrested by Afghan security authorities and sent to Germany.
