All day Sunday, October 28, from 9 am, a dog dancing contest will be held in Vannes, for the first time, the gym of the ASPTT. Overview of the discipline and presentation of the event with Christine Perrin, head of the dog dancing section, the Club Canin Vannetais.

What is dog dancing?

It is a choreography in music, between a master and his dog, and which usually tells a story, or is based on a theme. It is also known as "dereked". The service can be short, around two minutes, or longer, around four minutes. The teacher has two possibilities: to perform a "freestyle" choreography, where the figures are not imposed, and the dog works remotely, or to perform a "HTM" choreography, where the figures are imposed, the dog then works "at the foot" . Their program is noted by a jury. There is the artistic, technical, and complicity, checking that the dog was happy and listening.

What kind of competition can we see on Sunday?

Our competition is open to all dogs. He will have a beginner and novice level. We have 38 hires, who will run short programs, and most of them freestyle. Working the dog at the foot is very difficult. But we are less oriented towards the competition than elsewhere, the people will be there especially to have fun. And then dog dancing is a discipline where we "do the show". This is what we will try to show people.

How did you decide to play dog dancing?

At the Canin Vannetais Club, we have several sections, including agility or rescue at sea, for example. We started dog dancing because it is a discipline that goes up in France, coming from the United States. It is also a very good way to know your dog. Now I "read" the dogs' attitude much better.

How do you make the dog obey?

During the tests, we work without toys or food. This requires a lot of work upstream. To progress, it is not a step that must be passed, but a staircase: within two and a half minutes of passage, there are thirty tricks with the dog ... So imagine the work that there behind. But all this is done in joy and cheerfulness. After, the dog has a preference for certain turns, it is necessary to play on it so that the lap which it prefers becomes a reward during the test. But it must be known: the dog obeys only his own interests.
