Shortly before his arrest in Lima, Peruvian ex-president Alan García has tried to kill himself. The 69-year-old shot himself in the head in his house and is currently being operated on in a clinic, his lawyer Erasmo Reyna said.

Peru had imposed a ban on leaving the Social Democratic ex-president for corruption investigations. García was then in November in the ambassador Uruguay in Lima refuge, which he left in December but again.

García is being investigated on suspicion of accepting bribes. These should have been paid by the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht during his second term of office from 2006 to 2011. Odebrecht has admitted paying $ 29 million (€ 25 million) in bribes to officials from three different Peruvian presidents.

The prosecution is investigating whether Odebrecht paid bribes in connection with the construction of the first subway line in Lima. García sees himself as a victim of political persecution. He actually lives in Spain and traveled to Peru for a testimony.
