The UN Security Council expressed concern today about the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip, which has been besieged by Israel since 2006.

Chinese Ambassador Ma Zhaoxing, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, said members expressed concern over the situation in Gaza.

This came during the annual ceremony held on Wednesday at the United Nations headquarters to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

The International Organization commemorates the UN Resolution 181 (II) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 29 November 1947 and provides for the partition of Palestine into two States.

In his statement, the President called on the Security Council to limit the economic and social suffering of the Palestinians.

The Security Council called upon the parties to resume negotiations aimed at bringing about peace between them.

The ceremony was attended by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, UN General Assembly President Maria Fernanda and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Palestinian People, Senegalese Ambassador Fodi Sik.

The Ambassador of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, was also present, as well as a large number of representatives of States members of the General Assembly.

Israeli forces have imposed a siege on Gaza for more than 12 years and allow food and medicine to enter only in rare cases.
