The man who, in October 2016, gave himself up to the police after the discovery of human remains in plastic bags was found guilty of killing his uncle, aunt and two young children. He also dismembered his victims.

A young Brazilian, accused of having dismembered his uncle and aunt and killed their two young children in August 2016, was convicted Saturday by a Spanish court. Patrick Nogueira, 21, fled to Brazil just after the quadruple murder that rocked Spain on August 17, 2016 in the small town of Pioz, near Guadalajara.

He returned to Spain in October 2016 and surrendered to the police after the remains of the victims were found in plastic bags at their homes. The uncle and aunt, from the state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil, had been dismembered.

"I did not choose to work as I do"

The man known as "the detective of Pioz" had confessed but his lawyers had pleaded a "temporary mental disorder" and put forward his confession to try to mitigate the sentence. The nine jurors felt that the murderer "planned his action and was aware of the consequences" of his actions. "He knew how to distinguish between good and evil," they added.

The court will decide on the sentence later. The public prosecutor's office has demanded the maximum sentence in Spain, which can mean life imprisonment and in any case would require him to spend at least 25 years behind bars. "I would have liked to avoid all this happening [...] I did not choose to function as I do , " he said. "My emotions, my way of behaving, my way of reacting are not like those of others" .
