"It is unacceptable that the emerging positive dynamics were undermined by unilateral steps, which not only complicate efforts to improve the situation in Syria and establish a political process, but also create serious obstacles in normalizing relations between Israel and the Arab states," he said.

Safronkov stressed that Washington had made a unilateral decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights "contrary to the opinion and warning signals of the international and regional levels."

On March 25, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a document recognizing the Golan Heights as the territory of Israel.

Subsequently, the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that, according to UN Security Council resolution 497, the decision of the Israeli side to establish its laws, jurisdiction and administration on part of Syrian territory is invalid and has no legal force.

Federation Council member Igor Morozov commented on the situation in an interview with FAN.
