Justice must decide on the authorization to use the tilde on the name of a child, born in Quimper in May 2017. The Quimper court refused. On appeal, this Monday in Rennes, the Advocate General asked confirmation of the judgment of Quimper.

This Monday, October 8, the Rennes Court of Appeal examines the case of the name Fañch and his famous tilde. Fañch is the name of a child, born in May 2017 in Quimper. His parents had succeeded, after a first refusal, to register in the civil status, the Breton name with the tilde.

But the Quimper court had decided otherwise a few months later, in light of the circular of 23 July 2014, in which it is specified that the ñ is not included in the diacritic signs (umlauts, cedillas, etc.) authorized for the civil status.

The parents of little Fañch, present Monday afternoon, were hopeful. "We hope for a positive outcome so we can write our son's name as it should, " his mother told us. This fight also means defending our heritage, our regional language. "

The family of Fañch is supported by the association Skoazell Vreizh (Secours Breton), which pays its legal costs thanks to donations, and defended by the president of Nantes Jean-René Kerloc'h, who points to a question of "discrimination".

At the end of the proceedings, the Advocate General asked for confirmation of the judgment of Quimper. The case was taken under advisement. The decision will be rendered on November 19.
