Negotiations between the Afghan Taliban and the US envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad and his team in the Qatari capital of Doha continue, and the al-Jazeera correspondent in Afghanistan quoted the movement's spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid as saying.

The current negotiations were launched last Monday in Doha according to the agenda agreed upon at the last meeting between the Taliban and the Americans last month.

The Taliban have threatened to stop negotiations with Washington if pressure continues on the movement.

For its part, the United States confirmed the meeting of its envoy with representatives of the Taliban in Qatar, noting that the talks come as part of Washington's efforts to negotiate an end to the Afghan war, despite the continued movement in attacks against the Kabul government.

The US State Department confirmed the existence of Khalilzad and an intelligence team in Doha for talks with representatives of the Taliban, adding that these talks will take place over two days.

Taliban and US representatives have met four times since July to try to resolve a 17-year-old conflict in Afghanistan, but this is the first time that Washington has directly confirmed its meetings.

The meeting comes despite the Taliban claim responsibility for an attack on an Afghan intelligence base in the state of Wardak (central).

State Council member Nafisa Silay Wardak said at least 126 intelligence personnel were killed in the attack, which began Monday morning "when a Taliban suicide bomber detonated a booby trapped vehicle outside the base."

The rest of the al-Qaeda intelligence service, which includes 150 people, was wounded
In the attack.

US President Donald Trump ordered a reduction of US troops in Afghanistan by 14,000, while he expressed enthusiasm for ending the longest US wars that began in 2001 after the September 11 attacks.

"Fighting must end urgently, but striving for peace still means fighting when needed," he said on Twitter.
