A report released by the American Bar Association to the case of Saudi human rights activist Esraa Al-Ghamgam, who has been in detention for more than three years and is threatened with death, highlighted the rulings of the Saudi judiciary against international conventions against activists.

US lawyers have been following closely the trial of prisoner Esra, who has been in custody since 2015, the US-based CBS television channel reported.

The website cited a report written by human rights lawyer Oliver Windridge and distributed by the Human Rights Department of the American Bar Association, criticizing the Saudi judiciary. He said that the Attorney General's decision to "extravagance" against the prisoner of conscience may constitute a double violation of international human rights law.

According to the report, Israa is one of six Shiite activists being tried in the Specialized Criminal Court, which he described as notorious, and five of them face execution. The court has a record of unfair trials that led to executions.

The court appeared to have shifted its focus from prosecuting terrorism suspects to the prosecution of human rights activists and opponents.

According to Windridge's report, the Saudi activist was charged with participating in protests demanding the rights of Shiites in Sharkia province based on confessions extracted under torture because of her peaceful views that do not amount to crimes that make the death sentence acceptable under international law.

The US lawyer said that some of the charges against Isra were because of slogans such as "humiliation of humiliation," and other slogans demanding accountability of those who shot at demonstrations in 2011 in the Qatif area of eastern Saudi Arabia.

The Human Rights Department of the American Bar Association said the international community was closely monitoring the issue and what it would lead to.

Commenting on the report, CBS said that the crackdown by Saudi authorities against dissidents is attracting more attention following the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on October 2 at his consulate in Istanbul.
