A villager and a police inspector died after a riot on Monday, December 3, in villages in northern India, after the discovery of two dead cows. The animal is considered sacred in the country.

Two people were killed Monday by an angry mob in villages in northern India after the discovery of cow carcasses, an animal considered sacred in India, local police said.

Police fired into the air to disperse several hundred furious villagers, who set fire to vehicles and fired projectiles at the security forces, 130 km from the capital New Delhi.

"There were nearly 400 people from three neighboring villages , " said Anand Kumar, chief executive of the Uttar Pradesh state police. "They threw a lot of shots and fires," including firing dozens of vehicles, he added.

A villager and a police inspector were killed in the violence and an investigation was opened to determine the exact circumstances of their deaths.
