It is specified that in total 185 853 applications were received, which is 36 830 less than last year.

Seehofer believes that this result is related to the effectiveness of measures taken by the government.

Among others, he noted a decrease in the processing time of requests, an increase in the number of deportations and voluntary repatriations, as well as multinational agreements that allow refugees to also seek refuge outside Europe.

The Minister stressed that, as in the past year, Syria remains the leading country among the applications filed, whose citizens sent 46 164 requests for asylum in Germany.

In the second and third places in the number of refugees are Iraq and Afghanistan.

Earlier it was reported that Germany deported a record number of migrants to other EU countries for 2018.
