Five people were killed Wednesday in a shooting incident in a bank in a small town in Florida.

A man in the town of Sebring, Florida, fired a burst of bullets at Sun Trust Bank and then told the emergency police himself, police said.

Town police chief Karl Hooglund told a news conference that the suspect, Zevin Zafir, 21, entered the bank and started shooting, then told the police. After unsuccessful attempts to persuade him to leave the bank, a special forces unit entered and made him surrender.

The United States has witnessed such incidents from time to time, most recently on January 5, when three people were killed and four wounded in a shooting in Torrance, 30 kilometers southeast of Los Angeles.

Such incidents shed light on the issue of carrying firearms in the United States, where shooting incidents are repeated, leaving thousands dead each year.
