Once again, Finistère trembled Friday night. An earthquake of 2.8 was felt about fifteen kilometers from Quimper.

The earth trembled Friday night near Quimper, Finistere. An earthquake of 2.8 on the Richter scale was felt, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Network (RéNaSS).

One earthquake despite two alerts

The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers around 10 pm Friday near Elliant, a small town about fifteen kilometers from Quimper and Concarneau. At first, two shocks were recorded: a first of 2.8 and a second of 3.7 three seconds later. The second was removed from the site data on Saturday morning.

Contacted by Le Parisien , RéNaSS explained that an error had occurred in the earthquake detection system. Stations distant from that of Quimper have noted and overestimated a tremor in Lorient when it was actually that of Quimper.

A region prone to small earthquakes

Finistère is regularly shaken by small earthquakes. Last March, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred on the Crozon peninsula while Central Britain was shaken in February.
