Egypt's interior ministry said on Saturday that gunmen had been involved in targeting Christians a month ago, bringing the number of people killed in the incident to 21.

The ministry said in a statement that "the perpetrators of the incident were targeted to target some citizens during their return from the monastery of St. Samuel in Minya province on November 2 last."

It added that a group of them were identified in a mountainous area south of Egypt. The army was raided, killing two "terrorist elements" without naming them.

The Interior Ministry pointed out that the remaining elements are being pursued, without specifying their number.

On November 3, a day after the attack near the monastery of Anba Samuel in Minya, security forces killed 19 suspected militants.

The Islamic State Organization claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place at the same site as an attack in May 2017 that killed 28 Christians and claimed responsibility for the attack.
