Britain's MPs largely rejected the Brexit agreement negotiated by Theresa May's government with the European Union on Tuesday. A few minutes before the vote, the Prime Minister had nevertheless asked them to " respect (...) the result of the referendum ".

The defeat is total for Theresa May. Neither the promise to work more closely with MPs nor the calls to elected officials to betray the British vote for Brexit will have convinced the House of Commons. The parliamentarians rejected the withdrawal plan by 432 votes. An extremely heavy defeat, the greatest suffered by a government in the history of the country, moreover on the flagship file of the executive.

Theresa May spoke briefly to MEPs a few seconds after the vote was announced. With her face closed, she said she regretted the rejection and remarked that he did not say anything that parliamentarians want now. The Prime Minister has said that she must first and foremost ensure that she always has the confidence of the House. She accepted a debate tomorrow in Parliament on this subject.

Labor opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has in fact announced a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister in order to bring down the government and call an early election. However, Theresa May's allies have already warned that there was no question for the head of government to throw in the towel. Not only does it not intend to resign, but it should especially try to adopt its draft withdrawal with amendments to the European Union.
