Just 15 days after taking office, Jair Bolsonaro organized the signing ceremony at the presidential palace. He insisted on his credo: " the legitimate right to defend oneself " and to be able to " buy arms and ammunition ". The controversial decree authorizes the possession of a firearm at home or at work, but does not allow it to be carried in public places.

Brazilians will be able to buy up to four guns per person, proving they have a safe to store them. The duration of the permit has been extended from five to ten years. It will be enough to go to the federal police to get it and it will be accessible to anyone over the age of 25 without a criminal record.

The new president promised it during the election campaign. But according to a survey conducted at the end of the year, more than 60% of Brazilians oppose the possession of firearms. Jair Bolsonaro intends to reduce the crime and violence that undermine Brazil. With more than 63,000 homicides a year, the country has become one of the most violent in the world.
