Amazon e-commerce has worked with US police to catch thieves who steal company parcels when they leave the front doors.

Many states face the problem of parcel theft in front of homes during the holiday season, so police in New Jersey have decided to put fake packages with GPS tracking systems in front of a number of houses in the city with cameras installed on their doors.

Amazon provided data on locations where parcel theft had occurred, helping state police to select specific homes for the task. One parcel was stolen just three minutes after leaving it in front of the house.

An Amazon driver was recently arrested in Oregon for stealing a booby-trapped parcel in front of a house and 18 stolen boxes were found in his car.

"We value the efforts of local law enforcement agencies to combat package theft, and we are committed to helping them with all we can," Amazon told the Associated Press.

The US Postal Service expects to deliver about 900 million packages during Christmas days, and a survey suggests that nearly 26 million Americans have been robbed in front of their homes.

Last year, Amazon launched Amazon Key, which enabled smart home owners to allow parcel distributors to open their doors through an electronic application and leave packages inside.
