Dr. Muhair Shukair, of the Medical Unit, advised that the infant should stop using the dummy at the age of six months. This can be extended to the age of one year, but no more.

Dr. Merah's advice came during a meeting of Al-Jazeera Net on Saturday, during the third day of the first biomedical conference on orthodontics, which opened on Thursday in Doha and concluded today with 160 participants from 50 countries.

Long-term use of the end causes orthodontic problems for the teeth, and may lead to an open child's bite.

She pointed to the dummy calendar, which is shaped like a cherry and a little flat from the front, and be of soft material, which is better. However, it is recommended that the baby's use of the end (ie, herithe) be stopped at the age of six months to one year.

The doctor explained that there are signs that the mother to pay attention to the child, indicating the existence of a problem calendar, including:

  • The bite is open, that is, there is a vacuum between the front teeth when the teeth bite back.
  • The bite is deep, and there is a great overlap between the upper and lower front teeth when occlusion.

The child should be presented to the orthodontic specialist for screening at the age of seven years, with the emergence of permanent teeth, to identify any potential problems early and deal with them before exacerbation.

It should also be presented to the orthodontist before this age when there is any doubt about the existence of any orthodontic problem.

She said that there are habits that lead to the emergence of problems of the calendar, such as:

  • Sucking the baby's fingers.
  • The anterior positioning of the tongue, usually the removal of the tongue out of the mouth repeatedly.
  • Place the tongue in the front area of the throat and push, called the tongue payment.
