Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker announced Wednesday that the number of flights allowed between the EU and Qatar would gradually increase following the signing of an agreement this week.

"Once it is ratified, there will be a gradual increase in flights until we reach full-blown skies sometime between 2020 and 2024," he said in Berlin.

Yesterday, the two sides signed a wide-ranging air services agreement on Monday, the first of its kind in the Gulf.

This agreement opens the airspace of both parties in full to the Qatari and EU airlines.

The agreement allows for an unlimited number of air transport, increased traffic, tourism and trade, and daily shipments between Qatar and the EU.

Al Baker also said Qatar Airways will continue to operate the Airbus A380 in the foreseeable future.

In February, Airbus announced plans to halt the production of the A380, due to the emergence of many production and technical problems with the aircraft, which began to be used on a commercial scale in 2007.
