On March 16, 2014, a nationwide referendum was held in the Crimea and Sevastopol on the future status and nationality of the peninsula. Over 95% of the participants expressed their will. After the coup in Kiev, Crimeans refused to recognize the new leadership of Ukraine. Tens of thousands of residents of the peninsula demanded the return of the Crimea to Russia. After summing up the final results of the plebiscite, Russian leader Vladimir Putin signed an agreement on the entry into the country of two new subjects - the Republic of Crimea and the city of federal importance Sevastopol.
