Shaved on the sides and back, longer at the top.

This

haircut

that is seen so much among young people in Spain, and actually throughout the world, which

many footballers have not taken long to adopt,

male hair inspiration wherever they exist, has the name of

undercut or degraded.

In all its versions, this haircut requires a shave with a

blade or razor

and constant maintenance, with

reinforcement visits to the hairdresser

every few weeks.

And here is the reason that dermatologists from various parts of Spain allege that, since 2021, there has been

an increase in cases of ringworm

in Spain.

In fact, for approximately two years, dermatologists in different areas of the national territory have detected more cases of fungal scalp infections, the so-called

"scalp ringworms"

in the adolescent male population.

The identification and concern for the problem, shared by dermatologists, has been the origin of a collaborative work carried out within the scope of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) and accepted for publication in the journal Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas.

The study, entitled 'Outbreak of dermatophytosis in the head and neck region associated with shaving in hairdressers: a multicenter descriptive study of a series of cases' shows the clinical and epidemiological findings in a retrospective study of

107 cases collected

by a group of Spanish dermatologists. .

This study suggests that this

new social trend of shaved heads and degraded

hair among male adolescents would be the cause of the outbreak of cases of ringworm of the scalp in hairdressers.

How is an undercut or gradient haircut

The

undercut cut

began to break with corduroy in 2019 and behind this popular style that is characterized by having the sides shaved or faded in different very short sizes, are, among other references, the hairstyles of the protagonists of the popular Netflix series

'Peaky Blinders'.

Already in 2019, although the studies by Spanish dermatologists begin in 2021, Tommy Shelby

's haircut

(the role of

Cillian Murphy

in the series) was one of the most requested in hairdressers, a revival, like many of the cuts of hair, from bygone times, in this case, from the 30s of the last century.

The series marks hair style, something similar happened with the invasion of

Pablo Escobar '

style' mustaches after the premiere of

'Narcos'

or the classic look with

Don Draper's marked parting in 'Mad Men'.

The

undercut

seeks to "show off very short or shaved hair on the sides of the head, from below to the temple area, and longer on the crown part. Its technique is simple: it consists of shaving the part bottom of the head from the bottom up, which will contrast with the top," they explain from

Menta Beauty Place

(Madrid).

And why has this haircut swept young people?

We are talking about a very versatile cut that can be adapted to all ages and hair types, no matter if it is straight, curly or wavy.

And it can be worn in many different ways:

an edgy undercut,

which is characterized by not having degradation between the upper part of the hair and the sides, and can be worn with long or shorter hair, combed completely back or giving it a little volume. taking it to the side;

a

military style

with its sharp side fade, a short or medium top, and a sharp side part that is often shaved for added intensity, or

the mohawk,

an angular cut simulating a crest, which can be worn in different lengths, both on the upper part and shaved on the sides.

Who is affected by the ringworm outbreak?

The fact that these different styles of shaved heads and fades are worn

among the younger male public

makes it precisely this section of the Spanish population where the cases of ringworm that have caused the alert raised by the AEDV have been detected.

Spanish dermatologists allude to this relationship with international fashion, the maintenance of which involves

going to the hairdresser on a weekly

basis to cut the hair in the occipital and temporal areas, by degrading or shaving;

which may have favored the spread of ringworm through

infected electric razors.

As explained by Dr.

Leonardo Bascón,

dermatologist at the Dermatology Service of the General Hospital of Granollers and lead author of the study, "it is likely that the contaminated shaving material is being shared among the different clients of some hairdressers who would not be having take into account

the rules of disinfection of the material".

And it is that the contagion of ringworm is produced by contact with the spores of the fungus with the scalp and the hair follicles of the patient.

Hence,

choosing the right hairdresser

that respects the appropriate security measures is essential for public health.

As a result of the problem, according to Dr.

Jorge Romaní,

a dermatologist at the Dermatology Service of the General Hospital of Granollers and another of the co-authors of the investigation, they have stated that "this outbreak must be taken into account by competent Public Health bodies, which corresponds

to ensure compliance with the disinfection standards of

the material used for shaving in this type of center."
