A Syrian marries his two daughters with a dowry of less than one dollar

The step taken by a Syrian employee in Al-Hasakah, to marry off his two daughters with a dowry not exceeding one dollar, was widely praised in northern Syria, and was described as bold and rare.

Syrian media reported that the head of the family, Ibrahim al-Alou, married off both of his daughters late last month, with a dowry equivalent to 1,000 Syrian pounds for each, which is less than one dollar (the price of the dollar reached 7,000 pounds a few days ago).

She said that Al-Alou is a government employee living in the Syrian city of Al-Hasakah, and that he married two of his daughters, with a dowry of 1,000 Syrian pounds for each without any preconditions.

Regarding the goal of that step, Rudaw Media Network quoted Al-Alou, 47, as saying, "The idea is to facilitate marriage, and religious motives prompted me to do so, as I wanted to marry my daughter off to a man of good character, without caring about his financial situation."

In addition to facilitating the conditions of marriage, Ibrahim had another goal, which was to encourage others to reduce dowries, to ease the burdens of marriage.

Ibrahim has two sons and three girls, two of whom he married, and this step encouraged Ibrahim's brother and cousin to marry their daughters in the same way without conditions, he said.

Rudaw said that Israa Ibrahim al-Alou, who finished high school, "got married without holding a wedding ceremony with a dowry of 1,000 Syrian pounds," and quoted her as saying that she was "not forced" to marry.
