A former owner of a pet shop in Saitama Prefecture was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of violating the Infectious Diseases Control Law for trying to smuggle monkeys, whose import is prohibited in principle, from Thailand.
In principle, importation of monkeys is prohibited, as they may be infected with viruses such as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, which has a high fatality rate.
