A new identity card in bank card format has been gradually replacing the old models since September 2021. While this format change does not require any particular action on the part of holders of a French identity card, it has nevertheless been an opportunity for cyber crooks to create an SMS scam, reports Yahoo!

On Twitter, a user shared a suspicious SMS she received.
“SERVICE-PUBLIC: Deadline to obtain your new identity card in accordance with the new regulations.
After this period, the manufacturing costs will be entirely your responsibility.
The message refers to a site that appears to be that of the Public Service.

A fake link
But, in reality, this is a misleading link.
The "l" in public was replaced with a capital "i", and a counterfeit site was created under this fake link, which has since been disabled by the authorities.
There was a form on the latter to receive the personal information of the victims.
The French Administration reminds you that it is not compulsory to request an early renewal of your identity card.
It is possible to continue to use the old format card until it expires, which will automatically give access to the new card.
This expiry period was also increased by five years in 2014, for all persons born before 1995. As a reminder, this new identity card format was launched with the aim of harmonizing cards in all countries of the European Union.
