Gan Yu gave a face-to-face interview for the first time after leaving the intensive care unit about the 17-day survival in the wild after the Luding earthquake

CNR Beijing, September 27 (Headquarters reporter Zheng Yi Bai Jie Ge) Gan Yu, a missing man who was rescued on the 17th day after the earthquake in Luding, Sichuan, was transferred from the intensive care unit to the general ward the day before yesterday, and is expected to undergo fractures tomorrow. Operation.

Yesterday afternoon, with the consent of the family and the hospital, the reporter met Gan Yu in the ward.

This is his first face-to-face interview since he was rescued.

Gan Yu said that in the more than ten days he lost contact, he never despaired or wanted to give up.

As for everyone's concern and praise, he believes that he is "not a hero", but has a "survival" experience.

On September 21, the news that Gan Yu was found by local villagers in Menghugang quickly made the news. This was the 17th day after the Luding earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8.

Before Gan Yu, who lost contact during the escape, was rescued, he couldn't count how many days and nights he persisted.

Gan Yu said: "About the first ten days... I remember that I was relatively awake on the eleventh or twelve days, and the back was basically blurred. I remember climbing the cliff, I was tired, and after sleeping for a while, I felt it was over. One day...I feel like I've been in there for more than 30 days."

He ate kiwis from the mountains to satisfy his hunger.

"There are some wild fruits on the road, just eat them. When it rains, squeeze a handful of water on the moss and drink a little, that's all." Gan Yu said.

Squeeze the water from the moss, I learned it from the documentary "The Wilderness Survival".

This is one of Gan Yu's rare outdoor survival knowledge.

The protagonist's experience of "drinking urine" in the film was later used by Gan Yu.

Gan Yu: There is really no other way. If you want to survive, you have to drink your own urine.

Reporter: What was the situation that day?

Gan Yu: I'm so tired, and my mouth is dry.

In an interview with reporters on the afternoon of September 26, Gan Yu expressed his wish after recovery from the hospital bed, and the first sentence was to eat.

"The thing I want to do most is definitely want to be healthy and have a good meal, and be with my family. I'm also grateful to the people who saved me."

Connect the video call of colleague Luo Yong.

This was the first time they talked after being separated for more than ten days on the way to escape the earthquake.

Two Sichuan men who have just experienced the hunger test, the first greeting is to eat.

Luo Yong: Is it okay to eat now?

  Gan Yu: No problem.

Luo Yong: Nice to see you.

Gan Yu: Thank you, you even asked them to rescue me when you rescued me.

For the rest of their lives, they did not forget the agreement to "eat together".

Luo Yong: We both came out alive, don't forget our meal.

Gan Yu: Yes, we will meet again when I am discharged from the hospital.

Gan Yu remembered that at noon on September 5, when the earthquake struck, he and Luo Yong were at the Wandong Hydropower Station near the epicenter.

In the chaos, Gan Yu lost his glasses.

Gan Yu: We were just taking a break at noon when there was an earthquake, and we ran out of the lounge.

I was hit by a stone and I rolled down the slope and lost [the glasses].

Reporter: What is the degree of your glasses?

Gan Yu: There are 500 degrees.

Reporter: How much visibility is there after the glasses are lost?

Gan Yu: It can only be seen about ten meters, only a few meters can be seen.

Gan Yu and Luo Yong resettled the casualties and opened the floodgates to avoid danger.

The next day, they climbed the mountain to escape together.

On the Tiger Hill at the junction of Shimian County and Luding County, Gan Yu was unable to move due to limited physical strength and eyesight.

The two decided that Luo Yong would find a way to survive first, and then bring someone back to save Gan Yu.

Gan Yu said: "After the separation, I waited for him for a few days and called for two or three days, but no one came. I was also worried that he might be killed on the way and there would be aftershocks. I followed the direction he said. Keep going that way."

After Luo Yong was rescued, the rescue team followed his instructions and went to Tiger Hill to find Gan Yu.

On September 11, the fire rescue team told reporters that they found Gan Yu's underwear near the place where the two separated.

This news once made people who care about Gan Yu have uneasy conjectures.

Yesterday, Gan Yu explained to reporters that the clothes were used by him to shake and call for help.

"Is it white? That's what I used when I called for help. It was put there at the back, and I left." He said.

Gan Yu followed Luo Yong's direction and groped for the mountain.

Stop and rest when you are tired.

Gan Yu: Sometimes it’s under a tree, sometimes under a rock, and sometimes it’s just shrunk there.

The clothes and pants in the back are worn out, so just sit on the ground with your buttocks.

Reporter: Have you encountered any animals?

Gan Yu: Not like that, but I can hear some animals calling.

Reporter: Are you not afraid of encountering snakes or something?

Gan Yu: There shouldn't be any snakes. It's so cold up there.

  Reporter: What is the temperature?

Gan Yu: It's cold anyway, and it's only ten degrees at night.

Reporter: What do you do when you are cold?

You may not have enough clothing on your body either.

Gan Yu: Just huddled there, sleeping as little as possible at night.

Lie down and sleep during the day when the sun is shining.

It may rain on 15 days out of 17, only the upper part of the raincoat is dry and the lower part is wet.

When the sun comes out the next day, just lie down in the sun and bask in the sun.

In the process of surviving, he injured his foot again.

Gan Yu said: "When I was looking for a source of water to drink, I found a small creek, but there were still rocks rolling down from it. When I stepped on it, I accidentally rolled down the rocks and hit my foot. It may take a day or two to stay on the ground. In the next four or five days, there is basically no food, only water. "

On the morning of September 21, Ni Taigao, a villager across the mountain, heard Gan Yu's cry for help.

When Gan Yu was sent to the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, he was already in a semi-conscious state, with water and electrolyte disorders throughout his body and multiple infections.

Compared to the usual photos, he is skinny like another person.

Treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) continued until the 25th, before being transferred to the general ward of the Trauma Medical Center.

Wang Guanglin, director of the Trauma Medicine Center of West China Hospital, said: "The current problems are a fracture and dislocation of the left ankle joint, and a foreign body of a screw in the left foot. It is planned to perform an ankle joint surgery on Wednesday after the examination is complete and ready. Fracture open reduction surgery, internal fixation with steel plates and screws, and then take out the foreign body nails on the back of his feet. This operation should be said to be safe and controllable. It may be observed for 2-3 days after the operation, if there is no problem with the wound , you can meet the conditions for discharge, but it will take 6-8 weeks to completely lose the crutches and walk."

Recalling the experience of escaping death on the hospital bed, Gan Yu's voice was still a little weak.

But he said, surviving is more important than anything else.

Gan Yu: The most difficult thing is that when I called for help, no one responded, so I called out there.

Reporter: Did you ever feel hopeless or want to give up at the time?

Gan Yu: No, I still really want to survive.

I feel that someone is still looking for me, and I haven't reported the safety of the people at home.

I want to get out, I want to survive.

I think it's really hard to survive, and it feels like nothing is more important than life.

Reporter: Will you eat kiwi fruit again in your life?

Gan Yu: I didn't eat kiwi fruit before, but now I think it's delicious.

Reporter: Many people online say you are a hero, what do you think?

Gan Yu: I don't think I'm a hero, this is just an experience that I can survive.
