Tik Tok will soon launch a feature that reduces the availability of adult content to young children

The Tik Tok platform for short videos announced, yesterday, that it will soon launch a new feature that will reduce the availability of videos that deal with "accurate topics or are aimed at an adult audience" for its users of young ages.

"We are working on creating a new system for classifying content based on the type of topics in terms of age appropriateness," TikTok said in a statement.

"In the coming weeks, we will start rolling out a first version to avoid making adult content available to users under the age of 18," she added.

"When we identify a video that contains subtle themes or is intended for an adult audience, such as fictional scenes that are too scary or unsuitable for young children, it will be marked as adult in order to prevent users under the age of 18 from viewing it."

The platform also indicated that it is testing a feature that will limit videos related to the same topic that are suggested to users, and viewing the full collection of them may be a problem.

Tik Tok stated that it is developing a new sorting feature that allows users to select the videos they do not want to appear on their page by associating them with keywords.

The platform, which is very popular among teenagers, is constantly accused of causing mental damage to youngsters.

A lawsuit was recently filed against TikTok from the parents of two American girls who died after participating in a blackout challenge ("blackout challenge") that encourages the user to suffocate himself until fainting.

The lawsuit accused TikTok's algorithm of "intentionally and repeatedly" posting videos of the obfuscation challenge.

In March, eight US states, including California and Florida, announced the launch of an investigation into the "harmful" effects of Tik Tok on children and motivating them to spend more time browsing the application.

While the user must be over the age of thirteen to create an account on the platform, in the United States, people below this age can use a modified version of Tik Tok and suitable for them (Tik Tok for Younger Users).
