Shortly after the murder of two police officers in the Kusel district became known, hunter circles suspected the main suspect Andreas S.

This was reported by two witnesses from his environment on Thursday before the district court of Kaiserslautern.

One of them then turned to the police, who had already found Andreas S.'s papers at the scene of the crime.

Rumors had been circulating among the Saarland hunters for a long time that Andreas S. regularly poached – including in areas in the Kusel district.

However, many did not dare to take action against S., said a 38-year-old hunter.

He reported on a conversation between S. and two other hunters that he claims to have overheard last fall.

Accordingly, S. said he would "shoot his way free" if he was ever stopped.

At first, the hunters didn't take it too seriously.

It was assumed that S. wanted to build up a reputation so that nobody could stop him.

Andreas S. insists on his version

S. was described several times on Thursday by witnesses as a passionate hunter who, until a few years ago, organized well-organized hunts where he attached great importance to observing rules.

Some also said that S. liked to be the center of attention and was quick-tempered when someone expressed a different opinion.

S. is said to have threatened a fellow hunter when he ended their friendship in late autumn: "Then there is no longer any protection for you and your territory, and I hope we don't cross paths at night." Meanwhile, Andreas S. insisted in court that his co-defendant Florian V. had also fired shots on the night of the crime and that he had shot the police officer in a kind of self-defense position.
