The Supreme Court of the United States ruled this Thursday to limit the authority of the government's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate the emissions of polluting gases emitted by power plants, a decision that curtails the ability of the White House to fight against change climate.

The court's six conservative justices ruled, against their three progressive colleagues, that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) could not issue blanket rules to regulate emissions from coal-fired power plants, which produce nearly 20% of American electricity.

In a ruling written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the highest court in the country found that the Clean Air Act does not give the EPA broad authority to regulate emissions from already-built plants.
