The first animal diagnosed with diabetes was recorded

A zoo in Edinburgh announced that it had found the first anteater with type 1 diabetes, according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.

The zoo said in a statement, that the giant Nala anteater at Edinburgh Zoo was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, in the first reported case of its kind, and is equipped with a monitoring device used for humans.

The giant anteater is being treated for diabetes at Edinburgh Zoo, with keepers relying on a device normally used in humans to monitor its condition.

The zoo explained: Supervisors trained the animal to take daily insulin injections, while a donated glucose monitor is used to ensure it receives the correct dose.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the level of glucose in the blood becomes too high.

Dr Stephanie Motta, a resident veterinary surgeon at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said Nala was diagnosed after showing symptoms similar to those seen in humans with diabetes.

Motta added: "The goalkeepers first discovered that something was wrong, when Nala was losing weight despite eating the same amount, or sometimes more than usual.

She continued, "We did a full health check under general anaesthesia, did a lot of tests, and found out that Nala had type 1 diabetes."
