A popular drink that lowers blood sugar

A study published in the journal "Nature" found that drinking three cups of chamomile tea daily can improve the control of blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes, as reported by "Russia Today".

The researchers, from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, aimed to investigate how the effects of chamomile tea on blood sugar (a measure used to determine how much food affects blood sugar levels) and control of antioxidant levels in type 2 people.

Chamomile tea lowered HbA1c and insulin levels in the blood, in addition to significantly increasing total antioxidant capacity.

The researchers concluded: "Short-term intake of chamomile tea has beneficial effects on glycemic control and antioxidant status in patients with type 2 diabetes."

However, the researchers note that a larger population sample and a longer intervention period would be necessary to demonstrate significant clinical improvements.

Blood sugar levels rise in response to the breakdown of food into blood glucose (sugar).

And chamomile tea has been shown to have this mild effect on blood sugar.

It is made from the flowers of the chamomile plant (a herb belonging to the Asteraceae family).
