With its alleged 1,250 kilometers of coastline, Finistère was already the most maritime department in France.

The new calculations of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (Shom) and the National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN) come to reinforce its status a little more, reports

New tools

The new data show 2,263 kilometers of coastline, or 1,000 km more than what had been revealed by previous studies, from 2020. “Finistère has a special place in France: it is the rockiest department with 1,123 kilometers of rocky coast, the longest department with 2,263 kilometers of coastline, and which includes no less than 8,494 islands and islets more than 3 meters in diameter”, detailed to our colleagues Julie Le Coz, geomatician photogrammetrist at the department Geomatics of Shom.

The two establishments have developed several tools, including a new product called Limite terre mer (LimTM).

These tools make it possible to obtain more precise data relating to the coastline which will make it possible to meet several needs.
