• What is the most recommended sunscreen according to dermatologists

  • Ricardo Ruiz, dermatologist: "If you are going to be in the sun for more than 10 minutes, use protection creams"

It is

quite news

that it will be sunny, weather forecasts, at Easter in Spain.

Less news should be that, if you are going to enjoy its rays, you should protect yourself from them with a good SPF

sunscreen

never lower

than 30.

Wherever you go, a good solar is that cosmetic that you should always have on you.

It is a clamor among all

dermatologists

that SPF should not be dispensed with at Easter, summer, beach, but neither in the city nor in winter.

The photoprotector

is in fact, for skin experts, the essential cosmetic 365 days a year, in addition to being the best anti-aging ally, so it must be included in any self-respecting daily routine, to prevent most common skin cancers.

It seems that the idea is catching on.

At

Cantabria Labs,

a Spanish dermocosmetics brand, they have been carrying out the

HELIOCARE Observatory for six years,

a survey on the habits of Spaniards in front of the sun.

In these 2022 editions, the new ones are good:

66% of the population

admit to using photoprotection all year round and, in addition, in 2021 it was already

83%

who claimed to use

an SPF 50 or more.

But

how important is SPF?

How is it chosen?

What solar do we choose?

We answer the million questions.

What is SPF

The dermatologist Pedro Rodríguez, from the

Madrid International Dermatological Clinic, explains it:

"It is the SPF protection index

(Sun Protection Factor),

which must be

at least 30,

and we must take into account the spectrum of action. It is highly recommended that covers, in addition to

UVB rays, also UVA.

If it also works with other lights (IR, visible light...) it can be an extra".

It is worth remembering here the effects that each type of radiation has, as Dr.

Leticia Alonso,

dermatologist of

the Pedro Jaén Group, recalls:

  • UVB:

    are those that produce

    erythema or burn,

    immunosuppression and possible

    skin cancer.

  • UVA:

    those involved in

    photoaging and pigmentation,

but also in carcinogenesis, which is the progressive transformation of normal cells into malignant cells.

  • IR (infrared):

they account for a large part of the radiation that reaches the skin and produce inflammation and alteration of

    the deep dermis (photoaging).

"Ideally, the photoprotector should also cover visible light, especially in people with pigmentation such as melasma or lentigines," adds the dermatologist.

Which SPF is the best sunscreen?

And how do we choose the one that suits our skin type?

"The number that accompanies the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is used to know by how much the time that

each person can be exposed to the sun

without burning is going to be multiplied. By 'burning' we already refer to an externally visible response on the skin, in the form of

redness,"

explains Dr. Pedro Rodríguez.

Theoretically, if someone who doesn't apply sunscreen burns in 10 minutes, when they put on one with SPF 30 they will burn

in 300 minutes,

and if they have SPF 50 they will burn in

500 minutes.

"But this is only the case 'under laboratory conditions'; in 'real conditions' that person is going to burn in much less time than the SPF indicates and, for this reason, it is advisable

to always use a cream with SPF 50,

to to be able to count on the greatest possible margin of protection time", suggests Rodríguez.

What is the difference between SPF 30 and 50?

In reality, this difference is very little.

For Dr. Ricardo Ruiz, from the International Dermatological Clinic, "creams with a factor

of less than 15 should disappear

from the market; from then on, the difference between the protection indexes is minimal. A 30 blocks 96.7% of the radiation while

50 blocks 98%".

But, and although SPF 50 is always a safe value to turn to, when choosing a photoprotector we must also take into account

our skin type.

For this reason, for the lightest skins, a sine qua non condition, SPF 50 is mandatory, while

brown skin could use SPF 30.

How much SPF should be applied?

Not only quality SPF lives the ideal sunscreen.

In

how much we apply

also lies the correct defense against the sun's rays.

It is not advisable to go too far, because too much is not good either, but falling short would be a serious mistake and would lead to inadequate protection.

In numerical terms, the fair amount would be equivalent

to 2mg per square centimeter,

or, what is the same, filling the palm of the hand in each application.

Dr. Ricardo Ruiz adds the importance of protecting certain areas with creams, such as the

ears, lips and nose,

"where dermatologists operate more on skin cancer."

To conclude, in addition to finding the sunscreen that has all these qualities, we must not forget two more things when it comes to protecting ourselves from the sun: no matter how much protection we put on, we must not abuse it, it is better

to go to the shade for a

while and avoid burns above all, the most implicated in the appearance of long-term diseases.
